Summer Vacation – Week 6

Monday – the peeps are three weeks old today.  They spent most of this morning in the coop until it got too warm and then back into the brooder inside with a fan running.  They aren’t spoiled.  Record temps today. 108°!

It was warm when I got up today so I knew it was going to be tough to stay cool.  We spent our trying.  First we went to the Antique Mall.  They have beautiful items on consignment and air conditioning.  We spent two hours there and it was a great opportunity for the girls to see a lot of old items and ask a ton of questions about them.  It was a free activity too.  There is no admission and you get a museum-like experience.

Next we headed off to the craft store to get a few supplies on sale for upcoming projects – total spent $16.31.  After that we walked across the parking lot and I treated the girls to hot fudge sundaes at McDonalds ($1.29 each) and ice cold water – total spent $4.83.  We haven’t been to McDonalds in nearly a year and we remembered last time it was for ice cream treats while on vacation.  Home for a neat back-to-school T-shirt project and our hot summer day was complete.

Tuesday – After early morning watering chores we did some serious housework.  Our reward for all our hard work was to head out to the $1 theater and take in a movie – Pirates, Band of Misfits – total spent $3.00.  My parents stopped by for a visit afterward and then it was time for supper.  This day went by way too quickly, if you ask me.  It got up to 100° today.

Wednesday – I decided once the summer heat hit we would head indoors for our activities and that is exactly what we did today.  We spent most of the day in the family room working on sewing projects.  We were blessed by a visit from a friend who brought me a large bin full of craft supplies for the girls.  Fabric paints and appliqués.  I’d say we have some new projects in our future!  It got up to 100° again today.

Thursday – another scorcher today and a lot of smoke from the surrounding forest fires so we stayed inside.  I got up early and got everything watered outside and then we headed indoors for a quick postcard project and then a fun sewing project – jean skirts.  The skirts will be a great addition to the girl’s back-to-school wardrobe and will be so cute with the T-shirts we did earlier this week.  The girls were able to sew them up themselves and they felt pretty good about that.  Another sewing lesson in the bag!

We took a break for a quick trip to the grocery store for produce, Walgreens for ruled school paper (79¢ each; reg. $2.99 each, I bought 3), the gas station, the post office and the library to pick up a book we ordered and to turn in the last of their summer reading slips.  Their prizes were a pass to the Discovery Center and a free scoop of ice cream at a local treat shop.   Yeah, more family fun ahead for us!  104° today.

Friday – today was our “free” day.  The girls played outside and made mud pies while I stayed in and sewed.  Later they came in and read their library books.  The chicks were able to stay out in their coop all day and they loved it.  Much cooler and not as smoky today, thankfully.
