Dish Cloth Etiquette

How long do you use a dish cloth or sponge before you replace it?  For me it is a daily thing and depending on how many dishes I've washed and how much clean up I've had I will do it more often.  I don't use paper towels much and cleaning rags are another thing I use for housework.

Dish cloths, rags, scour pads and sponges will harbor germs and bacteria so rather than spreading it around I try to keep it to a minimum.  I'm not going to pretend I'm not going to spread something around because it would be impossible.  Germs exist.

As a rule I use my dish cloth and replace it daily.  My dish towel is replaced about every other day.  Cleaning rags are replaced as needed depending on what it is I'm cleaning (I have a specific scrubber designated for the toilet bowl).

Sponges and scour pads get hot soapy water and a couple minutes in the microwave to kill germs and other little buggers I don't want to know about. J  When we lived in our house I would regularly put them in the dishwasher and run them through the wash cycle.  Soaking in hot water and bleach is another good way to clean your scrubbing utensils.

So how about it?  What is your typical routine?

  1. Every time I use it, it goes in the wash pile.

    1. It helps that my mom loves to knit dish rags, so I have an enormous pile of them, and I have a washer/dryer in the house. :-)

    2. That is nice! I run a load of clothes nearly every day so no biggie to toss in a dish cloth.
