Last Week's Thrifty Moves

I had a really great week!  It warmed up rained off and on and all of our snow is gone!  No flooding either.  Yipeeeeee!  We even had a little sunshine poke out from time to time.  My back is much better too.  I'm in the home stretch.

The oldest and I use the same shampoo and conditioner.  We are careful not to overuse it and a big bottle of each will typically last the two of us six months or so.  Last week, after standing them upside down for the last two weeks we finished up every last drop of shampoo and conditioner.  We ran a touch short on conditioner before the shampoo was gone, but we managed to get by with some hotel mini bottles of conditioner that were given to us.  Now onto the new bottles!

We used a rubber scraper to get every last bit of mayonnaise out of the jar.  There was enough to use for three sandwiches.

A co-worker gave me two containers of organic hummus and one of guacamole.  Yum!

I squeezed every last bit of toothpaste out of the tube before tossing it.  I turned a gallon milk jug into a compost collection bin to keep under the kitchen sink next to our trash can.  I washed out a few ziploc bags to reuse.

My kiddos finished up a jar of grated parmesan so I was able to save the lid, give it a wash and create another spice jar.  This one is for my dried parsley.  Yay!

I made another produce run and picked up cornmeal that I'd forgotten on my last shopping trip.  It was on my list too!  Glossed right over it.

I gave our kitchen scraps to the chickens and they gave us eggs!  We now have two hens laying.  Spring is coming!!!!  Yippeeee!

My girls have been busy!

Tuesday while my daughter was playing in pep band at a basketball game I took some "me time" to run errands nearby her school and did some super thrifty shopping.  I went to the mall and picked up my pajama top I had ordered the week prior from JC Penney (on sale and with a 25% OFF coupon).  I had received a $10 OFF a $10 purchase coupon in the mail from JC Penney so while there I used it to pick up two bundles of Gold Toe socks for the girls.  One package included an extra bonus pair.  The socks were on sale ($9.99 ea. for 6 pairs) and after using my coupon I got them all for half the sale price.  I will use the socks as Christmas gifts.

Next I used another coupon I got in the mail from Bath & Body Works to pick up a free small bottle of lotion.  I didn't buy anything else there so no money spent.  I will use it as a stocking stuffer (Thursday's mail had another coupon!  Guess I'll be heading back).

I went to Dillards and found a pretty Calvin Klein top on clearance for $13.65 (it was regularly $39.99).  I used a gift card to pay for it so no cost to me.  I love their clearance sales.  On the way back to pick up my daughter I dashed into Target to pick up some migraine pain reliever and used the tail end of a gift card to pay for half of it.  My total spent out of pocket on my little shopping spree was just under $13!

Wednesday the youngest and I stopped into the dollar store to pick up garden seeds, seed pots and soil.  We also picked out some garden gloves, 2 pair a piece.  I also grabbed a couple of turkey roasting pans to use to corral the seed pots and any drips.

Yes, we are planning to put in a garden this year.  After some planning on paper and a lot of discussion we went through all of our seeds in the garage and our supplies.  I ended up going back to pick up a few more seed packets, pots and twine.  We are getting excited!

Thursday my oldest had another basketball game to attend.  We dropped her off and the youngest and I headed off to Goodwill.  I found the cutest little snowman candle lantern for 99¢ (co-worker Christmas gift).  A water saving showerhead for $1.00, I hope it works.  Pink tags were all 50% OFF and I found two darling sweaters for my oldest.  The gray cardigan looks brand new at $2.99 and the green sweater as well at $1.99.  I also found her another cute top for $1.99.  The young one and I didn't find anything for ourselves this trip.  Total spent $11.00.

I loaded my Friday Freebie onto my Fred Meyer rewards card, a Hershey candy bar!  On the way home from work I stopped off at the store and picked up three freebies I had loaded on there and a gallon of milk on sale for $1.79.  I'm liking these freebies.

After dropping my daughter off at the college campus later that evening the young one and I stopped at the new thrift store near our house so she could check and see if there was anything for her.  She found a super cute top, like new for $2.95 and a brand new pair of Jordache skinny jeans with the tags still on for $3.95.  She was so happy.  Score!  Total spent $7.00.

How was your thrifty week?

  1. Pep band is so much fun. When I was in college, we got paid to be in pep band - it used to be a scholarship but got moved around. I recommend your oldest look into it!

  3. We don't have Fred Myer here either. I love going to it when we are in Portland, just to explore the store. Stores here rarely offer free items, though Publix does have a penny item each Wednesday.

  7. You did really well! YOur shampoo lasted a lot longer than our's does here. My hubby and I share it and he tends to use more than I do even though we both wash our hair every day. ;)
Great finds at the thrift stores and with your coupons. Be blessed!

    1. Thanks Debbie. We only wash our hair every couple of days so that makes a big difference I'm sure. My hair and scalp is so dry that if I wash too often it gets miserably itchy. My stylist told me to back off on the shampooing and it has made a huge difference. On the flipside my daughter's hair tends to be oily and washing it every day made it worse so she has found her hair does much better now too. Go figure.
