Handsoap Dispenser Gets A Facelift

I treated myself to a Christmas peppermint scented hand soap from Bath & Bodyworks (on sale for $3) this past Christmas and we just finished it up last weekend.  I really enjoyed that soap and it smelled really nice.  I also love the economy of making my own refill liquid for those dispensers.  So I decided to recycle this one and use it in our downstairs bathroom.

It was one of the easiest projects I've taken on so far this year, I kid you not.  And probably the thriftiest too.

You can use any kind of paper.  A picture from a magazine, wallpaper, even
one of those pages out of an adult coloring book would be nice.

I grabbed my Modge Podge, you can get a small bottle at Dollar Tree, you don't have to get a quart of the stuff like I did, and a small foam brush also bought in a pack at the dollar store.  I then went through my stack of scrapbooking paper scraps leftover from the journals I've been making.

Once I finally decided on one I trimmed it to size and then brushed on some of my Modge Podge onto the side of the bottle.  Then I placed the paper on the side and positioned it and then covered the top of the paper with another layer of Modge Podge.  Once I was done with that I set it aside to dry.  It was that simple.

I mixed up two tablespoons of my Bath & Bodyworks shower gel (a birthday gift from over a year ago) with a cup of warm water.  The girls wanted some color so I also added a single drop of red food coloring and mixed that in.  Then I filled up the bottle and we were all set.  The soap smells every bit as nice as one I'd buy at their store.

A quick and simple project to recycle something that would have ended up in the recycle bin.  And the refill solution is super thrifty too!  We love it!

  1. My cheap refill was a shampoo that my hair quit liking. I had bought it on sale for $.57. When those 11 bottles were gone, I used all shampoo I had given up on. Plus, on sale and with coupons, I got body wash for the pump. Cheap shampoo and even cheaper body was work as well as the soap that comes in the pump. There is just me here, so I never dilute it, just use a tiny bit for washing hands.

    1. Amazing what works as handsoap. With the foaming soap dispensers you have to dilute the soap or it won't work. You sure save a lot of $$ on soap that way!

    2. I like having pink soap in my dispenser...and it is not foaming because I got it before foaming was a thing. One day, I had a bottle of red shampoo or something to put in the pump. As is turned out the bottle was red, so I was disappointed with no color. And, I like the bottle plain or either I am not inspired to decorate it. But, having found a pink shampoo for free, I finally had my pink bottle of pump soap. I don't let it stop me if I have to use yellow soap. And, I don't want to put color in it.

  2. I keep peppermint soap at my kitchen sink all year except for summer when I switch to lemon scented. Last year Bed Bath and Beyond had their Christmas liquid hand soaps for 69 cents in February. I bought a dozen peppermint ones and put them in a foam pump bottle. Works great and I probably have enough peppermint soap for the next 6 years, but the container is not attractive. Thanks for the inspiration and how to's. I will be giving the bottle a facelift soon!

  3. Great idea and it turned out nice too! In the past I've had those ceramic soap dispensers that I bought because I thought they would look nice in the bathroom but as it turned out the nozzle part kept breaking off. They were a waste of money. Instead, I reuse the original plastic dispensers the soap comes in (like you are doing) and so far they have lasted for years! You go the extra mile though with decorating them and even adding coloring to the soap! Amazing !

    1. It was a fun and super quick project. I spent some $$ on a fancy soap dispenser for our upstair bathroom and it rusted! I was so ticked.
