Last Week's Thrifty Moves

We have just completed the sixth week of 2018 and I hope all of you are having a wonderful and very blessed year so far.  I don't know what it is like in your neck of the woods but we've had warmer than usual temperatures and it feels a lot like spring.  My tulips are up already!

I saved the bacon fat after making Sunday breakfast

Sunday morning I put a big family pack of pork ribs into my large slow cooker and allowed them to cook until tender.  I removed a third of the ribs from the pot and put them into the refrigerator to make carnitas with and then put barbecue sauce on what remained.  We ended up with two separate meals and leftovers for lunches.

The girls spring cleaned the coop and put the old stuff into the compost bin on Sunday

Monday the oldest had to work on the robot so we dropped her off and the youngest and I waited for her at the library.  I wrote a little, caught up on emails, read the news and watched some Youtube videos while the youngest did homework and checked out some new books to read.

Pork carnitas with homemade guacamole

Tuesday I made the pork carnitas with the ribs I had stashed in the fridge and was able to have everything ready for supper by the time I left the house to pick up the youngest from cheering at a basketball game.

Ground turkey & mushrooms over rice with sauteed green beans

Wednesday the youngest had cheer practice, Thursday my oldest babysat and on Friday she had honor band practice and a basketball game to play at with pep band, Saturday it was back to robots.  That is the reason I try to make Sundays a NO FLY zone.  We really need that day to regroup and wind down and the girls need to rest and make sure their homework is done.

I had the back door open to let in some fresh air, Penelope stopped in for a visit

Friday I took my youngest out on a mommy/daughter date.  It was National Pizza Day so we headed off to our favorite pizza buffet where they were offering dinner for $5.99 a person.  We had a very nice time visiting and I got all caught up on what has been happening at school lately.

My daughter kept shooing her outside, but she was persistent
Saturday morning I slept in until 8:00 (that almost never happens).  I made my coffee, wrote a letter to my aunt, addressed some Valentines I had made, and headed into the kitchen to wash up the glassware and coffee cups that had accumulated since the night before.  I washed up those and since I still had nice hot soapy water I went ahead and wiped down all of the shelves in the refrigerator and then washed the silverware tray.

My trip to Fred Meyer

I dropped the oldest off at BSU for a day of robot building and headed off to the carwash with my change jar and gave my truck a bath for $3.  Then I went to the tire store and had them check and air up the tires.  Next to Fred Meyer to pick up butter that was on sale, bananas and any other bargains to be found.  I found some!

Bargain produce and a loaf of bread, the cottage cheese & sour
cream was on sale, plus I had coupons

When I got home I put away the groceries, started a load of laundry, fixed some lunch and then got myself busy with some writing and some crafting until it was time to pick up the girl from robotics.  On the way home I swung into the post office and mailed my Valentines.  I hope they all get to their destinations in time.

Yogurt for lunches

In spite of our busy schedule this past week I still managed to get yummy and healthy meals on the table, lunches made, stick to my housekeeping schedule and not lose my mind in the process.  That last one can get really tricky some days.

Sunday dinner was ribs, baked potatoes, corn & coleslaw - Yum!

How was your thrifty week?

  2. You scored some great deals. We also are having a crazy few weeks, as both boys just started soccer again. Carpools, practices, games, etc. It takes a bit of adjustment (and a lot of planning) to make sure everything gets complete!

  4. You had a nice, yet busy, week. Sometimes I really do miss the chaos of having active school kids, other times I embrace the peace.
Have a great week 7, which will probably be as bustling for you as week 6 was.

  5. I would have been exhausted by Saturday too. I'm glad you were able to sleep in. I am always amazed at the bargains you find in the stores. Unless the college students are gone, bargains are really hard to find here, at least on food. That chicken, oh she cracks me up...she just wanted to be inside with all of you. :)

    1. She is so funny. They'd all live in the house with us if they could get away with it. They love their people.
