Yep, that's
right. Carpet.
After much thought
and waffling back and forth I really thought I wanted to put in hardwood
floors. Right up to the end that's what
I was sure I was going to do until we pulled up the old carpet and heard the
echoing. It nearly drove me nuts. By the time I was ready to paint the walls
the girls and I had all come to the same conclusion, but none of us said
anything until I told them I'd changed my mind.
And they were thrilled!

Our neighbor has the
same floor plan as we do and they did hardwood throughout the entire downstairs
and they said it is loud. Everything
echos and the furniture slides around.
They figured with the furniture put back in the room it would dampen the
echoing but the way these homes are built it just didn't happen that way. I'm really glad I asked before I bought the
hardwood. Just for the ten days we had
bare floors really bugged me.

Sooooo, back to plan
A, we replaced the carpet, but not the traditional way. Instead I chose to do carpet tiles and we
think it looks beautiful. I really like
these tiles because the padding is felt instead of foam so it won't break down
like the padding does. I think that will
keep things much, much cleaner. I also
like the idea that if one gets stained or damaged we can remove it and replace
it without having to do the whole room.
Pretty convenient.

It was much easier
to install than traditional carpet too, but not necessarily faster. It took two of us about three and a half
hours to finish the living room. And
while it isn't as cushioned as traditional carpet, it is soft and has a good
feel. I really like it. Mostly I like that it is clean and new and I
no longer have nasty carpet in there.
Plus, the girls like to lay on the floor so I feel really good about
them laying on this. Although the oldest
hasn't seen it yet they both say they love it!

The room is coming
along quite nicely. Now, onto the next
project!

DeleteCarpet tiles! I've never heard of that, that's really cool. And so practical, especially when you have pets (one of my cats is a puker) or small children. I have hardwood floors in my house and that probably won't ever change, but man, carpet tiles are a really great and extremely practical idea. And they look great! :)
ReplyDeleteOne of my cats is a puker too and that is the exact reason I went with tiles instead of wall to wall. I'm really impressed with how they look.

That's right! I've done traditional wall to wall before too. My dad was a carpet layer and I learned when I worked for him after school and in the summers. He did a lot of things and I definitely inherited his genes!
DeleteIt looks great and the tile idea is super smart! How many matching color lot tiles will you stock to take care of future replacements?
ReplyDeleteBut I do have to say that a large area rug would have easily taken care of the noise issue. Wayfair and Overstock have well-priced, good-quality (wool) rugs.
I plan to keep an entire extra box in storage.

ReplyDeleteYes they do! Just like any flooring. They have an adhesive backing and they do not move. I am super impressed.

ReplyDeleteI could've put down an area rug to dampen the echo, but I that kind of defeated the purpose of why I thought I wanted hardwood in the first place. Plus they slide too and it if was crooked all the time I'd go nuts. My kitty is very pleased with my decision. :)
DeleteI have never heard of these and I just showed this post to my husband. Our bathroom floor is very uneven in the center and has a ridge where the support beam runs under the floor. It was that way when we bought the house. We have thought about having it tiled but it would require them doing something major to level the floor. I might try the carpet tiles. I don't like carpet in bathrooms because it is not very sanitary but if you can replace the damaged areas, it might work.
