The Girls Head Back To School

The girls head back to school on Monday and I'm super sad about it.  I always feel a little melancholy when school begins as it signifies the end of the summer and cold weather is approaching.  It also means my girls are getting older and there isn't a darned thing I can do about it.

This year my oldest daughter is a senior in high school and will graduate in May.  She has plans to go away to college and while I know I'm going to miss her I'm very excited for her too.  Which college she will be attending is still up in the air right now, but she has a lot of really good schools in mind and I'm sure she'll choose a winner.

Cheer and band camps began a couple weeks ago and we already have football games and practices lined up on the calendar.  I will be busy beginning next week dropping off and picking up kiddos once again.  My oldest will be in robotics again this year and my youngest is continuing in orchestra.  I volunteered to sew for the color guard this year, with flags and costumes, simply because I must not feel I have enough to do.  Apparently.

I still have plenty of projects lined up to do around the house and I'm hopeful to get the bulk of them finished up by the end of Labor Day weekend.  Fingers crossed that I can.  Then it will be full steam ahead into the school year and the holidays.  There is already Halloween stuff in the stores!

So while this mama may be a little sad, unlike a lot of parents who can't wait to get their kids back in school, my girls are getting excited about it.  I just cannot believe how quickly time has gone by.

  1. Melancholy indeed! My son headed back to school on Wednesday. He'll be a junior this year and I spent the day singing Rod Stewart's 'Forever Young' and crying. Next year will be his last first day of school...and my daughter's first first day, because she'll go off to full-day kindergarten. I'm going to be lost for a bit! I'll have plenty of things to do, but it'll be a sentimental adjustment.

And yup, all the back-to-school activities! My son is SUPER involved in choir and he helps out with the entire Fine Arts Department, both by helping to set up shows and by ushering the shows. He's super busy, and that means I'm super busy running him back and forth. No complaints here, though, I love that he's involved, and we have a great school system. :)

I hope your girls have a fantastic school year!!!

  2. I get melancholy when school starts as well. First, it's sad, because unlike me, my kids don't especially enjoy academics, so I know I face a struggle with keeping them focused on their studies. The greater melancholia, however, comes from an end to a summer of having them with me, with little responsibilities to drive a wedge in our relationship. I actually like my kids home with me. Plus, September and the start of school makes me acutely aware of the passage of time--our kids are growing up! Still, Autumn is, and always has been, my favorite season. Besides, we have until after Labor Day before school starts here!
Best of luck for a great school year!

  3. I was the only mother I knew who actually was sad kids were going back to school. I loved and liked my children. I really wanted them home with me, but chauffeured them year round to something. I was ecstatic when school was out and they could be home with me and we could go places together or be at home together.

  4. My daughter and I just toured, well, actually just drove around her new on-campus apartment at Uni yesterday. She'll be starting her 2nd year in late Sept. Then I'll only see her on weekends :( It has been so nice having her home this summer, I'm going to be a little sad when school starts but it's mostly because I worry about her catching the school shuttle and getting to classes on time - her apartment is further away from classes than her dorm was last year. Also, she will be cooking her own meals this year rather than being on a meal plan ... We'll see how that goes!

    1. That will be me next year when I my oldest heads off to college. I'll miss her loads and worry about her a lot too, but I know she'll be just fine.

  5. Hi Dana,
One of the things I've most admired about you - and there's a huge amount - is the way you have made sure your beautiful girls have had every opportunity to develop their intellects, musical skills and sports enthusiasms but have also given them the tools to be independent and self-sufficient so that if they ever face adversity they will be able to cope. I am so looking forward to reading about your oldest girl's big year. I know it's bittersweet for Mums to see their little ones fly the next but you must be - and deserve to be - so proud.

On a separate point, I have decided to buy your book but wanted to make sure I chose the format that would provide you with the best royalties. Which format is best for you?
Can't wait to read your book but I have so much to thank you for that I want to make sure you get the best revenue from my purchase.

    Anyway, have a great weekend.

    Heloise.

    2. Hi again, Dana,
Have just bought the Kindle version so I can read it this afternoon. I have a chilled bottle of wine at hand and a comfy seat in the garden and I know I'm going to enjoy a few hours with your book. Have read first three pages and I'm hooked!
      Best wishes,
      Heloise
