A Month Of Soup



We are starting off 2019 with a month of nutritious, hearty and delicious soups.  I thought it would be fun and thrifty to pull out all of our favorite soup recipes and make them up throughout the month of January.  I have a load of odds and ends in our freezer that need to be used up and I can't think of a better way to do that then to make soup.


Here are some of the soups I'm thinking about making:

Turkey Or Chicken Noodle Soup
Thai Curry Soup
Chili
Ham & Bean
Chicken Gnocchi
Minestrone Or Pasta Fagioli
Homemade Tomato Basil Soup
Clam Chowder
Asian Beef Noodle
Chicken & Dumplings
Hearty Beef Stew

Along with our various soups I will be making a variety of homemade breads and lots of fresh garden salads to go alongside.  Soup, salad and bread is a big hit around here and with January as one of our coldest months it will be a perfect and thrifty way to get warmed up and fill our tummies.

    1. I won't eat the bread and we are putting pasta on the side instead of in the soup. Some I won't be able to eat and that is okay. I'll figure out something else for myself on those nights.

  2. Oh, how I wish I could. But, while I am not much of a picky eater, soup is something I can't stand. As I am the resident chef, I get to decide the menus, so soup doesn't appear much. I might make the odd slow cooker beef stew or chili if I have plans to be elsewhere at dinnertime. Occasionally I will humor a request for chowder or apple cabbage soup, and rarely, very rarely, I crave a taco soup. I will make a split pea soup if I have leftover ham out of obligation, but again, only if I don't have plans to eat the meal. I truly dislike soup. Even the word makes my stomach turn a bit. I could serve salad and homemade bread every day for a month, though, and be happy!

  3. Your soups sound good. I love soup, salad and bread. However, the rest of the family doesn't. They don't mind if I make soup once a week, but any more than that and they protest.

    1. I get it. My girls are skeptical that we can go the whole month. We've done a whole week before but this is a first for us to try a whole month.

  4. Happy New Year! I love soups and could do soup for month but husband couldn't/wouldn't. I can do soups about once every two weeks. He is better at eating soup for lunch but not for dinner. Paula in Kansas

  5. I could absolutely do a month of soup! We have soup at least once a week around here, and I usually make some form of bread to go with it. It's cheap, filling, and nutritious, and super easy to make. I have an Instant Pot, so it's very nice to just throw stuff into it and walk away (in order to do other stuff, of course!). I had a friend once whose husband refused to eat soup because, in his words, 'Soup isn't a meal!' I laughed and said, "Guess he'd go hungry at my place, then!"

    1. We eat a lot of soup around here. We'll see how we do on a month of it though. I'm thinking of trying some keto bread recipes to go with some of the soups. My girls had cornbread last night and I admit I was a touch jealous. ;)

  6. I'm the only in my family who really likes soup, so probably not! I also can't eat dairy, so that limits some of the best soups. I love your plan!

  7. This is a smart move with using the freezer bits and pieces. I could easily do a month of soup, because I truly love it. TheHub? Not so much. He is ok with it as an occasional meal but not daily.

  8. I love soup, almost any kind. Some of the best soups are made with whatever needs to be used up in the refrigerator. I don't like food waste, so a kind of "stone soup" is great. My husband not only abhors soup, he dislikes anything even remotely "soupy," as he calls it! This includes sauces, gravy, broth, and so on. I don't understand him ;)

  9. This is my third day of eating chicken vegetable soup- I'm craving something with a little crunch now- so guess I could never do an entire month of soup but I love it. I'm going to try to make your Thai curry soup next week. I'm enjoying reading your blog.

    1. Add some sliced water chestnuts to the curry soup and you'll have some crunch. I'm going to make some next week too. Enjoy Nan! :o)
