Family Vacation

Saturday was the first day of our family vacation.  We were up bright and early and drove to Carson City Nevada.  Our halfway mark was Winnemucca where we bought gas and ate breakfast.  I packed snacks and drinks for the road.  The drive was very nice and fairly uneventful.  When we arrived at our hotel we were road weary and ready to chill out.  I cooked supper and we dined in our room that night.

Lots of walking that day!
The whole town is built on the side of the mountain so we got a good workout.

I absolutely love looking at these beautiful old homes

I love old trucks too

The next morning we woke up super tired because we had some really noisy hotel guests staying next to us interrupting our sleep throughout the night.  Nonetheless, we were excited to be on vacation and we weren't about to let a little sleep loss stop us from having fun.  I made us a really nice breakfast of sausages and eggs, we packed some snacks and filled our water bottles, then headed out to spend the day in Virginia City Nevada.  We had a wonderful time there walking around taking in all the old historic homes and businesses.  We visited the gorgeous Catholic church and their basement museum which was rather fascinating.  I took loads of pictures of the church, it was so pretty.

The courthouse is amazing.  As are so many of the old buildings here.
You can park in their lot for free outside of normal operating hours, which we did.

We stopped in at one of the history museums ($4 each admission price) but for the most part we took advantage of a lot of free things to do and see and checked out all the quaint shops they had.  There were a lot of little shows we could've gone to see and some tours we thought about taking, but it was a full day already just walking around to see all the sights.  Instead, I treated the girls to ice cream and then we headed back to our hotel.  I made dinner in the hotel room again that night and we finished off the evening watching Disney movies on TV.  All in all, a pretty great day to start of our week.

Amazing architecture

Monday was Memorial Day and we slept so much better as the noisy guests apparently had checked out.  It was raining like crazy so we decided to take it slow, eat some breakfast and see if the weather would clear up before heading out again and it did.  We ended up driving to Lake  Tahoe and spent a few hours there.

We found a free parking space and walked around all the shops.  Lots of fun things to see, but not enough of a temptation to buy anything.  We took a walking trail to the lake and enjoyed the time there the most.  The campground was very nice there too and I've got it on my list to come back and stay sometime.

The mine

On the way back to the hotel we stopped in at Trader Joes and picked up a few groceries.  We fixed a nice dinner for ourselves when we got back to our room, then settled in for a quiet evening and watched a couple Disney movies on TV.  We had another day of driving ahead of us so we were in bed pretty early that night.

The girls ended up in jail

After meeting up with this character

You have to watch out for those outlaws

They fell in love with this candy shoppe

In the morning I packed snacks and we filled our water bottles for the road.  We loaded up the car, topped up the gas tank on our way out of town and hit the road.  Check back later in the week for our next destination.  We were super excited to get there!

  5. I love Virginia City and Tahoe. We live in Reno/Sparks,NV and plenty to do around here. It's a nice drive around the lake in the summer / fall and Emerald Bay is beautiful. Across the road from Emerald bay there are hiking trails that lead to water falls. FYI when you are ever coming back through Nevada - Carson City (our capitol) has cheaper gas than Reno. So you might want to fill up there. Usually 30 to 40 cents a gallon cheaper.
    Take care.

    1. I've got to check out those trails. And I did notice that about the gas. We got some in CC before we left. Your capitol is beautiful. :)
