Things To Buy In August

I am not a huge shopper but there are certain times of the year when I need to shop for things.  If I can find them on sale, or better yet clearance, that makes me a happier shopper.  A few items I notice always seem to go on sale at this time of year are: 

·         School & Office Supplies – great loss leaders and lowered prices on crayons, markers, glue, pens and pencils, spiral notebooks, loose leaf paper, copy paper, binders, folders, calculators, etc.

·         Computers – in anticipation of college students needs many stores will runs specials on computers, monitors, laptops, accessories, flash drives and other media storage, etc.  Make sure to ask about any rebates available and if a store will price match.  It is also a good time to check out clearance items leftover from last year.  Check online too.

·         Socks and Underwear – loss leader prices on these items are often advertised to get you in the door.  Shoes are on sale too.

·         Lunch Boxes – the best selection of lunch boxes, lunch bags, thermoses and containers is right now.  If you need a new one or want to explore available options now is the time.  The prices may or may not necessarily be the best, however so shop around.

·         Back Packs & Book Bags – again the selection is higher this time of year and these are often priced as loss leaders or given “free with purchase” at many stores.

·         Lawn & Garden Items – most stores will have reduced the price on their remaining items and clearance items to move them out.

·         Summer Clothing & Swimsuits – if you can anticipate your children’s sizes next summer than now is a great time to add a few clearance priced pieces to their wardrobe.  Swimsuits and beach towels are at a fraction of their original prices as well.  You may even find sunscreen on clearance.

·         Camping Equipment – this is another area where stores will do another price reduction.

·         Produce – prices are much lower at this time and farmer’s markets have an abundance of great locally grown produce.  You can often negotiate great prices for large quantities you plan to can.  Check out the “ripe” table too. 

Remember:  No bargain is a bargain if it is something you don’t need or can’t afford in the first place.
