My Favorite Whole Wheat Bread

I make my homemade whole wheat bread a lot.  We like it much better than store bought and you can't beat it for the taste or the price.  It makes the best toast ever too.

I find it is the easiest and most efficient way to make bread with the use of a bread machine set on the dough cycle.  Once that is complete I divide it in half and shape it with a little flour dusted on my cutting board.  After letting it rise about an hour it is ready to bake and enjoy.

This is exactly how you want it to look when it mixes up.
Not too wet and not too dry.
Among my friends this bread is a favorite as well and one I get requests for quite often.  Several of you have expressed an interest as well.  So, by popular demand I am sharing my recipe with all of you today.

Whole Wheat Bread

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 cups wheat flour
3 tsp. yeast
1 tsp. salt
4 Tbs. sugar
1 Tbs. olive oil
1 1/4 to 1 1/2 cups warm water

Set bread machine to dough cycle.  Place dry ingredients into mixing pan and press start.  Add oil and water.  Dough should pull away from the sides of the pan and form a smooth elastic ball.  If too dry sprinkle with a few drops of water.  If too wet sprinkle with flour a little at a time.

Once the dough cycle has completed remove dough to a clean floured surface and lightly knead.  Dough should not be sticky.  Divide in half and shape into two loaves.  Place dough into lightly oiled bread pan.  Cover and allow to raise about an hour.

Bake in a preheated 400° oven for 20 to 25 minutes.  Remove from pans to cool and brush tops with butter if desired.  Store in an airtight container or Ziploc bag.  Freezes nicely.

Bake some soon and tell me what you think.

  1. I've always baked bread in the machine, but have never liked it. Next time I make it I'll take it out and bake it in the oven. I was watching Fifteen Spatula channel on the Roku and when she made her bread she said to put a shallow pan with water on the bottom rack and it would make the bread softer. I'm going to try that too and see how it goes. My bread machine is mostly used to mix together pizza dough.

    1. I never bake in mine but I love using it for dough. Keeps the mess and the work to a minimum. :)
