Thrift Store Wooden Basket Gets A Makeover

The oldest and I popped into Goodwill last week and found this sweet wooden basket there for $2.99.  I wasn't in love with the baby blue color, or the coating of dirt that came with it either, but I liked the look and size of it.

My daughter is a chip off the old block because while I waffled on whether or not to purchase it ($2.99 seemed a little high) she asked me why I wanted it, what I planned to use it for and exactly when I planned to fix it up.  I answered her questions and she said she thought we should get it.  So we did.

At home I scrubbed the basket thoroughly clean and let it dry overnight.  I was pretty grimey.  After removing the hardware I gave it a light sanding and a good coat of leftover gloss black spray paint, inside and out.  I put it in the garage and let it sit overnight to dry thoroughly.

The next day I painted the outside with some of our leftover silver metallic paint.  Once it was dry I spritzed on some of the black again, this time in light spurts.  I then dragged my daughter out to take a look at it and asked her if it looked stupid.  She didn't say much so I added a few more squirts and then she told me to stop.  It was perfect.

Another overnight stay in the garage to dry completely and then I put the hardware back on.

The metallic and the gloss black paint are seriously getting a workout around here.  Now that it is all done I think it looks great!

  2. I knew you had some good ideas up your sleeve for that cute basket and you didn't disappoint. No one would ever believe that beauty was a dirty thrift store find just a few days ago.
    Great Job !!!

  3. I love this! Your daughter is very smart... I think that's a good rule of thumb to follow when thrifting for yourself... what are you going to do with it? How will you fix it up? and when? If you can answer all of those questions then GET IT! :o]
