Handmade Pillowcases - Travel Size Pillows

Last fall I bought three travel size pillows with the idea that we could use them in the car for roads trips as well as when camping.  I always thought it would be nice to have designated pillows travel pillows rather than using the ones from our bed.  Besides full sized pillows are big and bulky, especially inside the car.  

Lately, it seems, I have been in pillowcase mode.  You probably remember the ones I made andthen handstitched the vintage crocheted lace onto the edges.  These were done pretty much the same way, only smaller.

I used fabric I already had in my stash.  The girls and I had a lot of fun one afternoon, Mother's Day in fact, choosing these fun color combinations and the coordinating ric rac trim.

For each pillowcase I cut one piece of fabric, on the fold, 17" wide and 22" long.  I cut a second piece, on the fold, 17" wide and 6" long.  I opened up both pieces and pinned the smaller pieces to the top edge of the larger piece right side to wrong side.  Then I stitched a 1/4" seam.  After pressing it flat (not open) I pressed a 1/2" hem along the edge of the shorter piece before folding it over in half and pressing it again making sure I was also covering the seam.

At this time I tucked the ric rac along the hem edge and then ran a stitch along the hem.  With wrong sides together I pinned along the side and across the bottom.  I stitched a 1/4" seam, trimmed it and pressed it nice and flat.  Then I turned it inside out so the right sides face each other and pressed again.  I ran another 1/4" seam to finish it with a nice French seam.

After turning it right side out all of my seams are nicely finished with no raw edges.  I love this way of making pillowcases.
