Last Week's Thrifty Moves

I spent most of Labor Day weekend embroidering and sewing.  I used scrap paper to make embroidery templates and patterns for a nifty project I worked on.  I can hardly wait to show you the finished product.

Sunday I took a break from my little project and the girls and I headed off to do our weekly grocery shop.  I perused the ads first and carefully made my list.  I found several stock up items to add to the pantry - olives 99¢ a can, mayonnaise $1.99 a quart, a big jar of peanut butter for $5 and three boxes of Triscuits (my favorite crackers) for $1.39 a box.  I added five packages of sliced cheese on sale for 5/$5 to the freezer and also picked up some fresh produce.

I don’t normally buy bottled water but as a treat I decided to splurge and bought these bottles of Propel for the girls and I to take hiking.  They were on sale for only 39¢ each.  I thought that was a pretty good deal.  Plus, we'll reuse the bottles and refill them with filtered water from our Brita to take on walks and hikes.  They are a good size and shape for carrying in your hand, which I like.

I mended a few little holes in my daughter's shirt.

I don't have a whole lot left on my stock up for winter list.  I held out for quite awhile until I happened across a case goods sale at Albertson's.  I was able to stock up on two cases of assorted pastas which will keep us well through the winter on into spring.  Each box of pasta came in at 59¢ each so I am really pleased that I waited.

While I don't like ramen much, my girls sure do.  In fact, my youngest loves it.  It is loaded with sodium and not a lot of food value, in my opinion, so we negotiate.  Last spring I bought two cases of the stuff when it went on sale and told them it had to last through the summer until school started up again.  Well, both girls made it with three to spare so I went ahead and restocked their supply with a new case for a whopping $2.88, same price as last time.  They were pretty happy about that.

We fed our kitchen scraps to the chickens.

How was your thrifty week?

  1. Hi there, Regarding the ramen, you can spruce it up with veggies and egg. That's what we do. Then it becomes a bit healthier :)

  2. You got some amazing deals! I wish I could find pasta and cheese at those prices up here. :) I had to laugh about the ramen. I grew up eating it and still do on occasion. One of my brothers used to cook up 2 packages as a snack after school every day for himself.

    1. I have to admit it makes a cheap snack for ravenous teenagers. The prices on cheese lately have been exceptional.

  3. Great deals..[ I got the cheese deal too, and stocked my freezer with the shredded cheese]. Ramen noodles.. not healthy for sure, But, I keep them for one of my granddaughters.. She loves them, and eats very little of anything.. So I trade off , with her---eat this veggie and then you can have the ramen noodles.ha

    1. It often comes down to bargaining, doesn't it? I tell my girls they can't have seconds or dessert until they have a serving of salad or veggies. It works. Have a great week!
