Keto buns and bread have been a real game changer for me
For the most part I am doing okay. I eat healthy, stay away from junk and processed foods most of the time and try my best not to falter along the way. Last spring, and even still, I have had some difficulty finding the things I used go and purchase whenever I needed to. Runs on meat have been especially challenging in the last few months, however I think even that has settled down now.
A few times I've run into issues with certain items like cream for my keto coffee haven't been in stock due to transportation issues. At that time I opted for half and half, but definitely not the same. Nonetheless, you just have to roll with things sometimes.
For the most part I'm still able to manage things. When I can't get what I normally buy I just go with the healthiest alternative I can find until things are back in stock. Or I just go without. At a minimum I stick to a whole food diet and keep it as clean as possible.
I scoop up bargains on meat every chance I get
What is something you've had a difficult time finding when you grocery shop? Are you still facing shortages or are things more normal for you now?
Meat is only going to get more and more expensive, and in shorter supply. A lot of meat processors have shut down and will not reopen. Some have been bought over by China, so everything processed there is shipped directly to China. The US will be paying the prices that Europeans pay for meat, which is more in line with the value.
ReplyDeleteVery sad to hear. :o(
DeleteDefinitely meat. I find it hard to stay on Keto with traveling and visiting with friends. A girlfriend and I went to the Oregon coast over the weekend and stayed with another friend who is a gourmet cook so I didn't do too good staying Keto on that trip but I ended up with a killer migraine the last day. I'm not sure if that's what caused it but I have my suspicions!

I would agree the change in diet caused the migraine. I hate those stupid things. If I stray I usually get one too.
DeleteLentils! I just found a large bag after looking since March. We normally stock lots of lentils in the pantry because they cook up quickly compared to other beans and we sprout them for salads. At my stores I've noticed that the stocked items are not very deep back on the shelves. Also they fill in holes with items from other areas of the store like charcoal briquettes in the dog food isle and paper plates and bowls in the soup and chili area. We still have limits on paper and cleaning goods here and there is no coin change in many places.-Kathryn in WA
ReplyDeleteLentils have been scarce, but I'm seeing then back in stores again too. I noticed a lot of bald spots on the shelves and minimal stocking as well. Makes one uneasy, for sure.
DeleteI've been able to find anything I wanted except: organic chicken and TP in the beginning since I don't hoard (got some right before we were completely out). We eat whole foods and produce has not vanished. Like you we did more pork/beef when organic chicken was scarce.
ReplyDeleteIt is hit and miss these days. If you have a larger budget for groceries then I think it is easier, but if you have a tight budget it is harder to find the lower priced meats. So far I seem to have good luck most days.
DeleteI've been struggling with the outcome of letting my family order what they want (too much junk food!), rather than my pre-pandemic routine of doing the grocery shopping on my own in-store. Since the pandemic started, we order online and then my husband drives there to do the no-contact pickup. For decades, Trader Joe's has been my #1 store but since they don't have pick-up or delivery service, we haven't shopped there since the pandemic started. I miss their cheaper organic items so much and they are typically very efficient with keeping things in stock.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I've read that in some large chain stores they are intentionally keeping shelves emptier and offering less choices because it's part of keeping infection rates lower (less exposure) by keeping customers from lingering and browsing too long inside the stores.

My girls work at a supermarket and they do employ various tactics to reduce risk, but mainly they keep the shelves stocked low in order to fill online orders for delivery and pick up. They really want people to use those services more and reduce in person shopping.
