Sadly, when we got home from our trip we had to say goodbye to our
big boy Leonard. We found him laying
beside my truck next to our driveway.
He'd been attacked by a dog earlier in the day and that was that. He was gone.
Not at all what we were expecting to come home to, but
unfortunately these things do happen. We
have a neighbor with a pit bull and a husky that get out on a regular basis and
run the neighborhood. While we can't be
certain this is exactly what happened we can assume it is the likely scenario
as they had gotten hold of him about four months back coming into our yard and attacking
him. It appears this is what happened
again.
At that time if took three of them to get a hold of the dogs and
drag them home. Clearly they are
unmanageable, at least by their present owners.
I don't blame the dogs, but I do blame the owner. They never speak to us and always high tail
it for home once they finally get a grasp on these dogs. I do not expect them to take any
responsibility this time, but my gut tells me they know what happened.
I do know that the next time the dogs end up on my property,
however, they will no longer have dogs to worry about. As far as I am concerned they do not deserve
to have these dogs and as long as they are on my lot they are mine to deal with
at that point.
Leonard was a sweet, sweet boy, a great big lover and he certainly
did not deserve the end he met. It was a
horrible way to end our wonderful vacation and I feel so incredibly sad for my
youngest who took it so hard. He was her
kitty and she is devastated.
I'm a firm believer in Karma and I know the universe will make it
right somehow. For now we just have to
find peace in knowing he had a good long life, was loved A LOT, and is now in
heaven with his brothers George and Henry hanging out and chasing squirrels.
Oh, I am so sorry this happened to your beloved cat! Condolences and peace to all of you.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ruth. I really hated to share this sad news, but I know a lot of you guys ask about our kitties and I felt I needed to let you all know what happened.
DeleteI'm so sorry. Words are not enough, I know. May you find strength and comfort in your time of grief.
ReplyDeleteI lost my Abby yesterday who I have had for 16 1/2 years. Today I feel like I swallowed a brick, the pain is so bad. But I have so many wonderful memories.
Oh Candace, I'm so very sorry. I know exactly how you feel. It really sucks in a big bad way. My heart goes out to you and your girls.
DeleteSo sorry Candace :-(
DeleteI’m so sorry. So soon after the loss of your other furry family. It’s so hard to deal with. It’s a shame the dog owners won’t take responsibility.
ReplyDeleteThank you Lee Ann. Not a good year for kitties in this house, let me tell you. :'(
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear about your cat. And,I'd be worried about the girls/you in a situation where the dogs get out & are out of control. The dogs sound unsafe.
ReplyDeleteThey are. But I'm prepared to defend us by whatever means deemed necessary.
DeleteOh no, Leonard ... I'm so sorry.
ReplyDeleteD.
I am so sorry for your loss. Our animals are part of the family and it is devastating when they pass, let alone to have been killed by a pack of dogs. Tell your youngest how sorry I am.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I will.
DeleteI am so sorry about Leonard! You know, these three dogs can kill one of your children or you. Call the authorities.
ReplyDeleteWe reported it. Not a good situation.
DeleteI am so sorry for your loss. Sending big hugs, Janie
ReplyDeleteThank you Janie.
DeleteOh no :-(. So sorry to hear that. And I'm totally with you on the subject of the dogs. They deserve better, just like poor Leonard did.
ReplyDeleteHe so did not deserve this. My heart breaks every time I think about it.
DeleteOh no, I'm so sorry to hear about it. Did you call the local Humane Society or the police? Here if a dog attacks another animal it will be investigated, the owner charged and the dog may be removed or euthanized. I was bitten by a dog while helping my daughter with her paper route many years ago, the dog wasn't put down that time but he bit the meter man a few weeks later and was destroyed.
ReplyDeleteMy sympathies to all of you and especially your daughter. It's never easy losing a fur baby.
I practically need a picture of them doing the deed in order to have anything done. It's crazy. You feel so helpless.
DeleteHe looks like such a cool cat sitting on the outdoor table. How sad for all of you! So very sorry.
ReplyDeletebarb in PA
He was super cool! We miss him so much.
DeleteIncredible... just incredible...
ReplyDeleteI am guessing you didn't even bother to accuse the neighborhood dogs -- because your neighbors would deny it, anyways. If/when the dogs reappear, document, document, document. (I wonder if you should have photographed Leonard's death spot too, though I'm sure you've buried him by now.)
He was a good cat, and you loved him. I'm sure, based on the photos, he loved you back. It is so diffcult to hurt after a death like this, but I'm grateful you had the years together that you did.
We had 16+ really good years. So grateful for that. I briefly thought about taking a photo, but my daughter was so upset I had to just take care of him and get it done. We were just in shock. Poor baby.
DeleteOh, that's devastating! You all--especially your darling younger daughter--have my utmost sympathy. I can't imagine how sad you are right now.
ReplyDeleteI am so angry at those miserable neighbors of yours! :^(
Thank you Sue. They rent so I'm hoping they move soon. :(
DeleteReading this post made me want to cry for you. I'm so sorry for your loss. My family would be devastated if this happened to our sweet kitty. Prayers for you all.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. Not at all what he deserved, that's for sure.
DeleteThis is absolutely heartbreaking. I'm so so sorry.
ReplyDelete:(
Thank you Emily. We sure do miss our big guy.
DeleteI am so very sorry to hear about Leonard. Please give my condolences to your youngest.
ReplyDeletePlease don't think I am preaching, but I have 3 kitties of my own and they do not go out. Growing up, we lost many cats to cars, mean dogs, fox, etc. I swore when I grew up and had my own home, my cats would stay indoors. Not a one of them has any desire to go out, and they were all outside cats and rescued by me. I don't worry about ticks or fleas, the crazy neighbor who poisons cats with antifreeze or that nasty fox I saw outside the other day. (We have woods behind us)
My heart couldn't take the sorrow of losing one of them. They are all perfectly happy to lie in puddles of sunshine on a cool day, and enjoy the central air when it's hot outside. So spoiled.
I realize death is something we all have to face, but making things easier for our children in this often cruel world is important too.
Hugs to your daughter.
I've kept our kitties indoors, however with Leonard that just wasn't his way. He loved to be outside and would yowl the house down to go out. I totally get where you are coming from though. Our babies are pretty spoiled too. Thank you Cheryl.
DeleteI am so very sorry about Leonard. We lost our cat Buddy the same way. The dogs that did it were of course a neighborswho willingly let them roam but without proof no action could be taken. Karma did visit the neighbors however, both the dogs were hit by cars the following week.Hugs to your youngest daughter as she deals with the loss.
ReplyDeleteThank so much Angela. Sorry to hear about Buddy. It can happen in a flash too. When he was attacked the first time I was right there and I couldn't move fast enough. I was so upset.
DeleteKarma = The Great Equalizer.
There are leash laws in every state, for dogs. I bet these people even have a fenced in back yard, but let there dogs out to make a mess in somebody else's yard.
ReplyDeleteTrue. And there has to be a reason these dogs are so aggressive. Owners need to take care of their animals.
DeleteMy condolences as well, its hard to lose a fur baby
ReplyDeleteIt really is. Thank you Patti.
DeleteTo the person that left the unkind comment, I'm not posting it. Shame on you. And like I said I believe in Karma, so there you go.
ReplyDeleteNo, no no. I am so sorry. It hurts so much when we lose our best friends.
ReplyDeleteJeannie@GetMeToTheCountry
Super duper sucks! I miss that big guy so much.
