Night Stand Makeover

A couple weeks ago I picked up this cute little night stand at our neighbor's yard sale.  It had the look I wanted and was made of sturdy hardwood.  It was also covered in a thick layer of white paint with a lot of brush marks throughout and had been distressed.  I know the distressed look is really in right now, but I'm not a huge fan so I was anxious to give it a facelift right from the get go.

I had hoped all it would need was a good sanding but it wasn’t to be.  Upon further inspection I realized beneath the paint was some water damage to the drawer bottom and the back of nightstand.  Both were warped and damaged beyond repair.  I would need to replace both.

The heat from sanding was causing the original finish to bubble up through the paint making a bigger mess.  At this point one might reconsider whether or not to continue on, but this piece had great bones and all wood furniture has value, at least to me.  I really wanted to bring it back to life.

Only one thing to do at this point.  Strip it.

I happened to have a nearly full can of furniture stripper in the garage.  I'd had it for years and was thrilled to find it was still good.  I spent a good two hours coating the entire piece by sections and scraping off the thick layer of paint and the original finish as well.

Once that was done I used a soft bristled brush and the hose to completely rinse the piece.  Then I let it dry while I headed off to Home Depot for a piece of luan plywood to replace the drawer bottom and the back piece.

The idea, originally, was to spend as little as possible on this project.  The wood was an unexpected expense, however I was able to defray most of the cost by returning something I had bought for another project and did not need.  I asked for store credit knowing I was going to turn right around and make another purchase.  I ended up spending less than a $1.50 on the plywood.

Once home it was time to sand and sand and sand.  Then the youngest and I used my jigsaw to cut the new piece for the drawer.  I slid it inside and tacked it with a single little finish nail.  Then we cut the piece for the back, sanding the edges smooth and dry fitting it.

It was too hot outside to paint so we moved the project indoors.  I had purchased a paint sample earlier in the week at Home Depot along with a couple sponge brushes.  The paint has primer in it.

When I originally bought the night stand I had every intention of painting it white again.  But Tania over at Little Vintage Cottage inspired me to try a color with this post.  I settled on Blue Essex by Behr.

The girls were so fascinated when the gentleman at Home Depot mixed my paint.  He had them come behind the counter and showed them how the machine works, showed them all the tints inside and how it worked.  I was really impressed with that.

The paint sample was the perfect amount to give it two good coats all over.  I painted the stand and then the drawer.  I loved it instantly.  I didn't want a baby blue nursery color and I was very pleased with the color I chose.  It doesn't look like a baby's color at all.  Much more adult and sophisticated.

I painted the interior side of the back piece and once it was dry I tacked it into place with a couple finish nails.  Then I painted the back of the night stand and it was all finished.

Final touches, once the paint had dried, included this pretty knob.  I had bought a bunch of these from Amazon when I redid the vanity in my bathroom.  I just love these knobs and I think it works perfectly on this night stand.

While I love the idea of shelf liner I don't happen to love shelf liner itself.  I find it hard to work with and it usually doesn't stay in place like I want it to.  It also tends to curl at the edges.  So instead I made this drawer liner out of a piece of pink gingham I had in my fabric stash.  I trimmed it with some sweet little flower trim too.  Love it!

It was a lot of work, a lot more than I originally bargained for, but I am thrilled with how it turned out.  Better than I had hoped, actually.  It was super fun too!

Before

After

Before

After

Total spent = $10.00 for the night stand, $3.27 paint, 69¢ for a sponge brush, $1.41 for luan plywood.  Grand total = $15.37!  Not too shabby.

Now I am excited to find my next piece to breathe new life into.

Last Week's Thrifty Moves

In the very early pre-dawn hours Sunday I opened all the doors and windows and set the box fan at the back door to blow in fresh cool air.  The smoke from a nearby forest fire that has been burning for nearly three weeks had given us a much appreciated reprieve.

I took advantage of the cooler temperatures that morning and made up a quadruple batch of our homemade granola.

I made a produce and milk run to Fred Meyer.  I used coupons and saved $3.oo on one of those nice big veggie trays they sell.  It was regularly $7.99 making it only $4.99 for a nice assortment of veggies for salads and snacking.  I especially enjoy the snap peas and little cherry tomatoes.

The two bottles of vegetable oil ($2.39 each) are my $5 weekly stock up item.  I need to focus more on those weekly items.  A well spent $5 really does make a difference.

I made up a new batch of my homemade Italian salad dressing mix.  Then I made a pint of creamy Italian salad dressing.  It pretty much tastes like Ranch dressing.

I had the opportunity for some overtime work once again and happily accepted.  It was a lot this time and I have to say I'm ready to be done with it.  I'm pooped.

Our next door neighbor brought us a shopping bag full of unopened packages of feminine hygiene products she no longer needs.  We were very happy to get that.

I finished up several holiday themed hanging dish towels and listed them to sell in my Etsy shop.  I hope they sell so I can put all that extra $$ toward my debt elimination goal.

I had 10 minutes to kill before leaving for work so I put together this really cute mason jar soap dispenser.  I had ordered three kits with soap pumps and these really cool vintage style lids.  Just had to cut the straw to length and screw the pieces together.  Super easy to do.

We found a pair of tennis shoes and two pair of dress shoes for my oldest on clearance for less than $60.

At the end of the week I made a cereal and lettuce run.  While I was at it I grabbed a bunch of bananas and an extra gallon of milk to carry us into this week.  I also stocked up on tissues.

I found two bags of cheese puffs on markdown for 50¢ each (at ShopKo, where we stopped for shoes) and treated my girls to their favorite candy bars that were on sale for 2 for $1.  Every once in awhile a little junk food doesn't hurt. J

Friday evening we packed a picnic, put on our suits and grabbed our towels before heading to Eagle Island State Park.  It was a perfect evening temperature wise.

We ate our supper and swam in the lake.  Afterwards we walked the trail that circles the lake.  We used our parks pass so this fun evening cost nothing out of pocket!

Saturday we celebrated National Root Beer Float day at A&W.  They were giving away free root beer floats.  Another no-cost family outing.  Love it!

And a teaser.  What on earth could I be doing with this?

How thrifty was your week?

My Uber Thrifty Month In Review - July

July turned out to be a terrific month for us.  Financially as well.  I just can't believe how quickly it went.

I began our month by paying all of our monthly bills and expenses ahead of schedule.  I earmarked a little extra for some grocery stocking and was able to get our freezer filled with meat as well as a few pantry items.  Although I'm over budget on groceries this month I know in the coming months I'll be spending less and eventually it all evens itself out.

I kept our spending in check by shopping for the items we needed when they were on sale and by using a lot of coupons to keep the costs low.  I was able to get my youngest two pair of shoes for school on clearance for only $45, a pair of pants for her school uniform on Amazon for $15 (free shipping), and a few school supplies dirt cheap.  I also dyed some polo shirts rather than replacing them.

My biggest spending was $100 I spent at JoAnn fabrics, which for me is a huge amount, but I also had a huge list.  I took advantage of their big sale over the holiday weekend and use coupons to save even more.  As a result I was able to get everything on my list within my budget.  That made me really happy.  I have been in project mode ever since.

I made a large payment on my debt elimination goal.  I also transferred the remainder of my business debt to a zero interest account which will help me to move up my timeline and pay it off even faster.  When it comes to paying off debt I do find myself getting impatient.  The sooner the better to get rid of that stuff.  J

Ham & Cheddar Pasta Bake

The other night I tried this new recipe and my kids went nuts over it.  I chose it because it is simple and you "bake" it in the microwave so in the hot summer you don't have to turn on the oven.  I added a crisp garden salad and it made for a quick and easy warm weather meal.

Ham & Cheddar Pasta Bake

7 oz. pkg. fideo pasta
2 cups cubed ham
1 can cream of mushroom, chicken or celery soup
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup milk
Salt & pepper to taste

Cook pasta according to directions, drain and place in large mixing bowl.

Add all remaining ingredients stirring to combine.  Pour into a 2 quart casserole dish.  Cover with and place in microwave on high for five minutes.  Serves 4 to 6.

That's pretty much it!

My Latest Thrift Store Finds

It has been quite awhile since I've been able to spend a day treasure shopping.  But that is exactly what the youngest and I did a couple Sundays ago and boy did we have a great time.  We even stopped for lunch at a Chinese restaurant, something we haven't done in ages either, midway through our day.  It was a great mommy daughter date.

At our first stop we found a bunch of really good stuff.  I love to collect vintage canning jars and I have several I use in the pantry for storing nuts, pasta, rice and dry beans.  I found three vintage quart jars and two Canadian Jewel pint jars.  I hadn't seen the Canadian jars before but and at 29¢ each I didn’t want to pass them up.

Now I need some help from my Canadian readers.  Can I still get lids for these?  If so, how do I get them?

I was thrilled when my daughter spotted a set of 5 vintage Pyrex custard cups.  I have been looking for these for ages.  Now I have a set of 4 plus a spare!  Cross that off the list.

We also found these drinking glasses.  There were only 3 and I am hoping to find more as time goes on so I can have a complete set of 4 or 6.  They are pretty and a nice size, I think.  So we'll be on the lookout for more.  J

Next stop yielded this dessert set.  I've wanted one of these for eons.  I like the design as it is not one I've seen before and the price was perfect.  $3.98!!

The next stop was Goodwill.  We found a Taste of Home cookbook and my daughter found a book she's been waiting for forever.  She looks every time we go into a store and this time she finally found it.  Regularly $19.99 (she said it is in her Barnes & Noble cart on backorder for $16.99) and we got it for $1.99.  I paid the same for the cookbook too.  I also grabbed a skein of white yarn for 50¢.

My daughter loves this series

Next store we didn't find another glass to match the others like we hoped but we did find vintage clear glass lamp for $4.98.  Super cute and I wasn't about to pass it up!  Now I'll be on the hunt for the perfect lampshade for it.

This jar dates between 1923 and 1933 - it's my favorite

On the way home we made one final stop.  Again no drinking glass but I did find another vintage quart jar for 59¢.

The Presto & Kerr jars are from the 1950s

We didn't spend a lot but we did have a great time and I have a lot of plans for all the treasures we found.  We got home and got everything washed up and the labels removed.  I used a soft bristled toothbrush to get the dirt out of the crevices in the lamp and it sure does sparkle now.  We tested it and it works too.

I'm in love with this set

Pretty much all of these lovely things will be going into the stash I'm collecting and storing in our hall closet for my future house.  I think you probably have a pretty good idea what the theme for my décor will be.

This little lamp is so sweet

Have you found any great treasures lately?

Last Week's Thrifty Moves

I went through the scraps I still have left from the Covered Clothes Hangers project and pieced together several most of what I needed to make another clothes pin bag.  Since I was short on the middle pieces on the front I crazy quilted smaller scraps and then cut out the pieces.  With a little trim and some decorative stitching I think it turned out really nice.  Now to decide which one I'm keeping.  Hmmm.

The oldest needed a day to herself in a quiet house so she could get caught up on some assignments for school  so the youngest and I enjoyed a day out of treasure shopping and went to lunch.  I'll be sharing more about our little outing with all of you tomorrow.

We brought home enough leftovers from the restaurant for us to have lunch the next day.

I made another kerosene lamp from a vintage canning jar I picked up at a thrift store on Sunday.  In January I had bought a set of lamp kits from Amazon, so I pulled another kit from my stash and added it to the jar with the lid adapter that came with it.  Now I have one for my future retirement house.

I had the opportunity to work more overtime and did.

I altered one of my bras, taking it in on the sides, so it would fit better.

We cooked and enjoyed meals all week using items we already had on hand.

I sold two dozen eggs to a co-worker and two more to a friend.  We fed our kitchen scraps to the chickens.

It was another hot week in paradise, but we managed to stay fairly cool opening the windows in the early morning hours and using the two A/C units in the afternoons and evenings.  Needless to say I am not looking forward to the next power bill.

I received a bunch of really good coupons in the mail from Fred Meyer and two neighborhood restaurants we happen to like.  Both within walking distance.

How was your thrifty week?
