Tomatoes, Peppers & Strawberry Plants

Oh dear lord do we have strawberry plants!

A couple weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon the youngest and I started some seeds.  We used egg cartons as our peat pots, seed starting soil and seeds from purchased at the dollar store, and made our own markers with paper and toothpicks.  It was a fun project to do together.

When we were finished we opened up the box of bareroot strawberry plants and got busy with a bag of potting mix and some little pots, also purchased at the dollar store, and got them all potted up.  I bought 20 strawberry plants with the idea of sharing some with a friend.  We actually ended up with 27 plants!

We set all of the strawberry plants inside a couple of aluminum turkey roasters, also from the dollar store, and set all of them and the egg cartons full of seeds on top of the dryer in the laundry room.  I attached our clamp lamp on the shelf above them.  My youngest gave each one of the strawberry plants a nice spoonful of spent coffee grounds and then we watered everything really well.  Strawberries plants love acidic soil conditions and coffee grounds are a great way to create this environment so I plan to give them some each week.  The next morning those strawberry plants were already showing signs of life and now nearly two weeks later they are beginning to look like strawberry plants.

I bought a big roll of bird netting from Amazon that has already arrived and plans are in the works for creating a secure garden area and a new strawberry bed.  Now if I could have just a little bit warmer weather and a small reprieve from the rain perhaps I could get outside and get started.

I know, I know, all in due time.

  2. Congrats on the plants. I am not growing strawberries this year. Last year all I did was provide not quite ripe strawberries for the chipmunks.
