When I Dream....

I dream of shiny new appliances for my kitchen.

Okay, maybe not, but oh my goodness gracious did I find some beautiful stainless steel appliances that would look soooooo pretty in my kitchen. (sigh)

The oldest and I had stopped into Home Depot to pick up a flapper for our toilet a couple weeks ago.  Super exciting purchase, let me tell you.  Whoo hoooo.  Anyway we cut through the appliance section on our way to the register and holy moly did I get myself a little bit side tracked.  First thing I saw was this gorgeous low profile refrigerator.  Not a side by side, just a fridge, like I used to have only fancier.

And a dishwasher too, of course.

My current stove and refrigerator are 22 years old.  I've done repairs to both, but they are holding up and performing just fine so I don't need to replace either one.  The dishwasher is 12 years old and honestly I could care less about it.  We hardly use it, except that it is white and wouldn't match the stove and fridge.  A true dilemma, I tell you.  My smarty pants daughter made the remark, "Oh too bad you already paid for Disneyland or you could afford to get these."  Rub it in a little?  Nah, I'd rather go to Disneyland.

But, I took loads of pictures and I'm thinking maybe I can make this a goal.  Hmmmm.  They sure would look nice in my pretty newly updated kitchen..... but.....

For now I dream.

  1. Look at your local craigslist etc.. you may find a good used set for much less.

    1. Not really in the market right now. Just dreaming. :)

  2. Depending on where the handle is/what type, I think you can cut magnetic sheets to fit on your old white dishwasher. We had to purchase a new refrigerator last summer--just one year out of our proposed move date to new home. We went to Lowe's, where we found the same make/model we had, discounted due to being returned. It had a dent on the side, and a scratch on the front. At 1/3 the original cost, we were sold. An added bonus: The work of putting the first mars on my brand new appliance was done for me.

    1. Yeah, that worked didn't it? Good for you. I think my dishwasher has a panel you can flip around. Not sure, but not even a thing right now. My appliances all work so I can't really justify replacing them just for pretty. :/

      Fun to look though.

  3. Depending on the model, you can also purchase a "stainless steel" panel. I think mine was $65. Now it's not real stainless--it's some sort of composite. But it looks really good and shines up well. And it totally "reads" stainless steel, just like my reall SS fridge and microwave. Works for me!

Meg, I am also a "scratch & dent" kinda gal. We have Sears outlets here in New England that sell so many different models of all the appliances; all are dented/scratched.

I know there are poeple out there who wouldn't touch a scratched appliance for a 60% discount, but I sure will! It's the only way I could afford my cabinet-depth SS fridge. And yes, I don't have to cry over the first ding 'cause it's already there. ;^)

    1. I got a washing machine once from a scratch and dent sale. The dent was in the back corner where no one would ever see it. Fine by me. Got a recliner too. Never could figure out what was wrong with it. Nothing visible.

  4. Just between you and me, I prefer appliances other than stainless steel. I purposely choose white or black now because my stove and dishwasher are stainless steel and they both drive me crazy with trying to keep them clean looking! Everything (water droplets, fingerprints ...) show up on them and they're very hard to wipe off - I don't use cleaners with chemicals, mostly just a solution of vinegar and water.

My dream is to replace all my stainless steel with something else, but like you, I'm going to wait until they absolutely fall apart before I spend the money for replacements! :)

    1. These are the new finishes that don't show fingerprints. My daughter and I smeared our hands all over them trying to smudge them. Nothing. Otherwise I wouldn't give them another thought. Smudges would drive me bananas.

  5. I use my dishwasher and was so happy to buy a new one this week. The racks of my old one are held together with zip ties and I had to weave new bottoms for the flatware basket out of orange mesh bags that citrus come in. This purchase is long overdue!

    1. You sound like me. As long as it still ran I'd repair the racks and basket too. So happy you got a new one. Enjoy!

  6. I feel the same. It's always nice to dream!!!

It's hard not to get distracted at Home Depot. One things leads to another. The tiles, then the paint dept , then the appliances, Lol. I love looking at the model kitchens and thinking how I could challenge myself to update on a small budget.

We have a family member that is sensitive to paint fumes and chemicals. So for now we r not able to make any updates.

It is still fun to look and dream though!!

    Enjoy, Janie

    1. It really is a lot of fun. We enjoyed ourselves. After all the work we put into on our kitchen this past summer I think it looks great just as it is. I'm quite satisfied. :)

  7. Oh I understand completely. Go for a flapper and start dreaming in the appliance section. Been there. But dreams are so much fun.

  9. What I've learned about appliance is that new is not always better. I sure do WISH I still had my refrigerator from 20 years ago...unfortunately we had a big storm come through and broke it so bad it cost less to buy a new one. Now, after only 2 years...the new one has been repaired once and is currently in need of another repair...don't get me started on washing machines....lol!

    1. Oh my goodness, you've had a bit of a bad run lately. My dream kitchen would be a 1950s kitchen filled with vintage appliances. Wouldn't that be fun?

    2. Indeed! In fact...these are the appliances I dream about...but, then again....not sure of their reliability? https://bigchill.com/
Oooooohhhh...the fun it would be!!! :-)

    3. They don't make them like they used to, I'm sure. So much of the appliance is made with computer driven components. I'm not nearly as pleased with my washer and dryer I have now as I was with my older appliances 20 years ago.
