The new
school year begins here on August 27th. Only one week from this coming Monday. In many ways it seems our summer has flown on
by and in other ways it does not. We did
a lot of stuff and we got a lot done!
As we
wrap up our summer we have rounded up and taken back all of our library
books in anticipation of a new fall/winter library schedule, yet to be determined. Then we went thrift store shopping to pick up
a few tops to round out our school wardrobes and give my girls a sense that
they have something new and exciting to wear to school.
We went
to our two favorite and closest thrift stores and for less than $25 I was able
to get them 9 tops, a sweater, a pair of jeans and two umbrellas. One of the tops and the sweater were brand
new and still had their original tags on them from The Children’s Place. The umbrellas were very important to the girls
because this year they will be walking “home” after school.
On Wednesday
I got them registered in their new school and we have gone over the school
supply lists to make sure we have everything we need. We do and it is all in their backpacks, ready
to go. They are stressed a little,
naturally, and excited too about their new school. We were able to meet the principal and the
secretary and tour the building and playground.
The school is very small compared to the other schools in our district
and the one they are coming from. They
have two portable classrooms out back, one of which my youngest will have her
class in. I pointed out to them that the
playground looks a lot like a park. They
thought that was pretty cool.
I got a
really good feeling about the school and the principal too. I had explained to him and to the secretary
that we are in a bit of a transition at home and that the girls were beginning
to feel the stress of all that on top of the stress associated with starting at
a new school. They really seemed
concerned and ready to help with whatever we need. The principal actually called me yesterday to
make sure I was happy with the arrangements and to see if there was anything
else he could do for me. Seriously!
I took the
girls to lunch yesterday while we were shopping so they could use their free
meal vouchers at Sizzler that they had earned through the summer reading
program. After all our shopping and
lunch we got home to find many packages for our business had arrived and were
waiting for us on our front porch. The
girls got to open them all for me and they loved that.
Today
we are going to go through and purge the summer clothes, organize the school
clothes, get out the new stuff we bought earlier this summer and wash the new
items we bought at the thrift store yesterday.
Tommorrow is haircuts.
We are all set and ready for school with a week to spare! How are
your school preparations coming along?
