KIS - Dishwashing

Because I wash dishes so much I try to keep this chore as simple as possible.  While I do own a dishwasher I find I rarely use it.  Typically I reserve it for use after large dinner parties.  I find I use it a lot during canning season as well.  But on a daily basis I simply prefer wash my dishes by hand.

Once plates are scraped and things are rinsed down the garbage disposal I fill one sink halfway with hot water and a healthy squirt of dish soap, about a tablespoon.  I put everything in the water at once, save for the pots and pans.  I then use my soapy dish cloth and clean out the sink with the garbage disposal.  I place the dish drainer in this sink so I don’t risk things slipping into the disposal by mistake.

With hot water trickling in the sink filled with dishes I wash and rinse everything and place it in the dish drainer.  Then I wipe down the counters, table and stove top.  Finally the pots and pans are washed up.

I keep my dishwashing supplies pretty simple:

Dish drainer
Dishsoap
Dish towel
Dish cloth
Scotch-Brite pad
Baby bottle brush (to get the parts I can't like the girl's drink bottles)

I leave my dishes to air dry and find that God does a wonderful job for me.  About an hour later I put them away and the job is complete.  Doesn't get much simpler than that.

  1. I don't have a dishwasher so I do my dishes by hand also. I think that if I get arthritis in my hands later on, I might seriously consider getting one. I don't mind hand washing (most of the time). Have a great rest of your week.

    1. I have arthritis in my hands and find the hot dish water is very soothing, especially in the winter. You may rethink that. :) Enjoy your week as well Paula.

  2. I had a portable dishwasher when I moved into my little bungalow/cottage. It was a huge pain in the you know what to operate and it took up way too much space in my tiny kitchen. Plus it wasn't cost effective to run. I donated it to the ReStore and never looked back.
I find it cathartic to swish my hands in the hot soapy water and play with the bubbles. The added bonus is my kitchen smells great because I use the lavender scented dish soap. Clean dishes, lavender aroma and a happy momma. Win,win, win !!!

    1. I feel the same. I use the good smelly dish soap too. It makes it nicer. Our dishwasher is an eco machine but I still prefer to hand wash.
