My Uber Thrifty Month In Review - May

I began the month with an extra $20 in my pocket.  Always Nice!  I had worked an extra 13 hours in April and got paid time and a half for it.  Also very nice!  The extra pay showed up on my first May paycheck.

All of our regular monthly bills were paid early this month.  With the extra pay I earned I was able to add more to my business debt repayment goal which moved up my payoff timeline a little bit.  Along with a good sized payment I transferred a sizeable chunk to a zero interest offer on one of my credit cards.  This will help me move the payoff timeline up by several months.

I used my Fred Meyer rewards points to purchase one tank of gas for the car saving an extra 10¢ a gallon which is very helpful as gas prices are steadily beginning to climb again.

Admittedly this month was not one of my thriftiest and certainly not uber thrifty.  As always, I try to spend as little as possible whenever I purchase something.  I always try to buy things on sale or clearance and use coupons whenever possible to cut the price even more.  I will also buy secondhand over new from time to time.  But spending is still spending.  And this month I spent.

I did some shopping and bought a few things.  A great sale at JC Penney netted me three pairs of slacks to replace all of my old and worn ones and three much needed bras for my daughter.  Everything was on sale plus I used two $10 store coupons.  While at the mall my daughter enjoyed dinner at The Cheesecake Factory where I used a $20 gift card to defray the cost.  Then we quite literally stumbled across a terrific clearance sale at Aeropostle that netted my daughter enough clothes for school next fall including a winter coat.  She spent a great deal of time trying things on as I walked throughout the store gathering things up for her.  We ended up closing the store.  She and I had a ball and it was a wonderful mother-daughter evening.

Later in the month I purchased fabric at Hobby Lobby and JoAnn fabrics as well as some sewing supplies, a vintage sewing box and a set of spice jars off eBay.  The fabric at Hobby Lobby was on sale and I used a 50% OFF coupon at JoAnns.  I also bought the rest of the camping gear we had on our list and some banker boxes from Amazon.

In June I plan to get back to my uber thrifty ways while I continue to work on my financial goals and my retirement goals.  I have lots of projects planned in the months ahead and fortunately none of them will cost very much.

  1. Sometimes you really do have to spend money to save money. I look at your super sale experience as a huge savings vs. having to buy it all in the fall. I am trying to become a tad more forgiving when I know I am purchasing things at a huge discount for later. The later me will thank the currently spending me when the things I am buying are needed.

    1. I completely agree. Having to overspend just makes me feel sick. And knowing there won't be this big expensive job of back to school shopping looming ahead has me feeling so relaxed and on top of things.

  2. Some months are just more expensive than others...but, you really accomplished a lot by getting the school clothes and had a great mother/daughter day too. So. I think you did a great job..

    1. Thank you so much. I know it is time and money well spent and she and I made some really good memories. She had so much fun trying on all those clothes and I got a thrill knowing she was having such a great time. Memories were definitely made. :)

  3. We go through spurts like this as well, some months are way up there, others, not so much. This month I'm hoping for a very low spend month as I'm focusing on reaching a hefty savings goal by years end, so need to stay focused!! :)
