Our Go Bags

For Christmas I made each of my girls the beginnings of what I like to call a Go Bag.  The idea behind it is so we can easily get ready to head out for a quick getaway or go on vacation.  And if there is an emergency (or zombies show up) we are better prepared.

I started out by purchasing two heavy duty backpacks.  Not too big because my girls are rather on the small side and they need to be able to easily carry them.  The backpacks have plenty of pockets for stowing various necessities.

In the pockets I put the following items to get them started:

Toothbrush, a tube of toothpaste and dental floss
Travel set of plastic bottles for toiletries
Trial size bottles of lotion
Comb and brush
Wet wipes
Facial tissues
Water cup with lid & straw
An all-in-one camp set of dishes and utensils

We are still working on them and as we add things I will share what we do with you.  I think it is important to be somewhat prepared, you know, just in case.  And I think having them for travel is a great way to figure out what works, what doesn't and to keep them well supplied.

What do you think?  Is this something you have done or would consider doing?

  1. I keep my toiletries bag packed and tucked under the foot of my bed. I also have a packing list for big holidays and another just for weekend trips (and another for the motor home). I start packing by dumping out my toiletries bag and just checking that I have everything. Very occasionally I borrow items and forget to replace them. It takes a minute or two just to check. Being 'pre-packed' or at least 'pre-planned' saves me ages and makes travel less stressful!

    1. That is a great way to do it. I keep a list for clothes. And I totally agree, when it comes to planning a trip I find packing the most overwhelming. Having a plan definitely helps with stress.

  2. I have deodorant, band-aids, ASA, Tyl, Ibu, sanitary pads-which also could be used as bandages, steri-strips, SPF chapstick, reading glasses, mirror, it's pretty well packed..

    1. Awesome. We have pads in our camp first aid kit. They work really well as bandages. I always have chapstick too!

  3. I found what works for me is to have a bag with essential toiletries as well as an inexpensive sports bra, change of underwear and a long sleeve tee. It has been a life saver (ok not literally but it has made life easier) when sitting with someone at the hospital overnight, or to gab and go for some other family emergency. It is not a true bug out bag, but more of a grab for emergencies bag.

  4. I always had to-go bags packed and ready for when my husband got sick with one of his stomach attacks and we had to book it to the hospital. Since we moved I haven't gotten these bags together but this post reminded me that it is something I really need to do. Out here, if he gets sick the best thing to do would be to get him to the hospital that specializes in his condition, which is over 3 hours away. Having these bags ready for myself and the kids would really be important and necessary for times like that, especially if we find we have to stay out that way for an extended period of time. Thank you so much for posting this! :)

    1. You bet Dawn. I can definitely see how this would be really important for you. I know, let's get you set up and then you won't need to use them. Best case scenario. :)

    1. In case you are in a place where you have to walk they will come in handy. It was mentioned at a prepping expo I went to last year.

    2. Or if the ones you are wearing get wet. :)

  6. I really want to make go bags! It's been in my head for a long time, a bag with essentials in case we ever have to high tail it out of here, but I've just never gotten around to it. We refer to our emergency supplies (which needs a lot more added to it) as getting ready for the zombie apocalypse (or sometimes as when Putin and Kim Jong Un attacks, which I actually believe is entirely possible).

    1. I would like to work on our emergency supplies for the house and beef them up. War, natural disaster, whatever the reason, it is good to be somewhat prepared, I think.
